Design communication 2

Various skills used in two- and three-dimensional methods of representation employing digital media are introduced, with an emphasis on their use as design tools that merge traditional and electronic techniques. The shift from primitives (cube) to surfaces and lines will be marked by a shift from Rhino to Grasshopper as the primary means of design generation. Case study projects introduce students to exceptional examples of architecture that build an intellectual foundation and advance the understanding of a specific topic. The combination of grasshopper and a case study project will ensure that one foot is planted firmly in the present while the other is planted in the past. It’s the ambition of this course that students develop an understanding of the relationship between yesterday and today.

A. Floor construction.

B. Steel beam. This is part of the structual support of the floor.

C. Plaster ceiling suspended from the structure.

D. Roll down shutter.

E. Jamb of movable window. The interlocking shape holds the sash in place horizontally while allowing it move vertically.

F. Removable glass stop.

G. Floor construction: linoleum on concrete-and-tile slab.

H. Steel beam. Since the floor is slotted to allow the window to retract into the basement, it cannot bear on the exterior wall. Therefore it is a structual channel in the wall and a steel beam on the other side of the slot.

I. The sill joint of the movable window is the point at which it is most vulnerable to water penetration; therefore it is provided with a metal drip cap above and a flexible seal below.

J. Stone sill. Forms a base for the glass portion of the house.

Grasshopper grids

The goal of this expansion is to open-up new forms of architectural expression. The semester aims to expand technical skill by introducing Grasshopper, a parametric software. Grasshopper is visual coding software that requires users to define the logic that underpins geometry.
